On 26 June 2019, the Government of Saskatchewan approved the Household Hazardous Waste Products Stewardship Regulations.
How does this affect you?
The regulations require first sellers (businesses that manufacture, sell or distribute household hazardous waste products in the province) to operate a product stewardship program approved by the minister for the collection and safe disposal of covered products, or enter into an agreement with another entity to operate an approved product stewardship program on their behalf.
Scope
Household hazardous waste includes materials with a flammable, corrosive or toxic symbol on the container, as well as pesticides and both single-use and rechargeable household batteries.
Environmental Handling Fees
The regulation does not speak specifically to the visibility of environmental handling fees (EHFs), therefore it will be at the discretion of any obligated member to determine whether the fee should be visible or hidden.
The next step for first sellers is to produce a product stewardship program for review by the Ministry of Environment within 180 days (24 December 2019).
