Sphera EC4P's B2BWEEE-Scheme meets WEEE recycling obligations in UK for 2019

May 19th, 2020

Sphera EC4P’s government-approved Producer Compliance Scheme, B2BWEEE-Scheme has received its Declaration of Compliance from the UK WEEE Regulator for the 13th year in succession.

Established in 2007 as the first licensed Producer Compliance Scheme in the UK, the Declaration of Compliance confirms that B2BWEEE-Scheme continues to meet its obligations under the UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations to correctly gather and report WEEE recycling evidence on behalf of each of its members.

I place electrical and electronic equipment on the UK market. How do I comply as a WEEE Producer?

The UK WEEE Regulations require all manufacturers and importers of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in the UK to:

  • register as a WEEE ‘producer’
  • join an approved WEEE Producer Compliance Scheme (if placing more than 5 tonnes EEE on the UK market annually)
  • provide arrangements for the management of WEEE
  • provide their registration number to distributors.

Even if you place less than 5 tonnes EEE per year on the UK market, you must still register with the UK WEEE Regulator and report compliance data to them. Producers of professional-use (business-to-business; B2B) equipment are not exempt and must also provide WEEE collection and recycling arrangements.

How EC4P can help?

Even during these unprecedented times, companies must continue to comply to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations across the world. We continue to see rapidly evolving EPR regulations, heightened awareness regarding the environmental impact of WEEE, batteries and packaging waste, and increased enforcement undertakings across the EU (see EC4P’s WEEE & Batteries enforcement guide here). Producers of professional-use EEE can benefit from membership to B2BWEEE-Scheme in the UK as part of implementing managed, centralised global EPR compliance arrangements using EC4P.

Sphera EC4P continues to be recognised as the industry-leading compliance solution. Sphera EC4P’s experience in implementing legally robust compliance solutions saw them win “Best Packaging Recycling Compliance Solution” at the 2019 BUILD awards; an award programme designed to celebrate industry leaders that have innovated and improved Recycling and Waste Management in the UK.
